Understanding the Risks of Vaping

E-cigarette use, commonly known as "vaping," is often considered an alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, it has been associated with significant health risks, including lung, heart, brain, and gum diseases. The design of the lungs is specific, allowing only pure oxygen from the air to be intentionally and, ultimately, permanently inhaled. Deliberately inhaling anything else, occasionally or continuously, goes against the natural function of the lungs. Understanding this scientific principle emphasizes the importance of preserving the respiratory system's intended purpose.

In early 2018, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine released a consensus study report based on over 800 studies. The report concluded that using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) poses health risks, as they contain and emit various toxic substances. Additionally, there is moderate evidence suggesting that youth using e-cigarettes are at an increased risk of cough, wheezing, and asthma exacerbations or even lungs collapses.

Research from the University of North Carolina revealed that the main ingredients in e-cigarettes (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin) are toxic to cells. The more ingredients in an e-liquid, the greater the toxicity. E-cigarettes also contain acrolein, a herbicide linked to lung injury, COPD, asthma, and lung cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration has not identified any e-cigarette as safe and effective in aiding smoking cessation.

How to Quit Vaping

  1. Set a Quit Date: Choose a date to stop vaping and commit to it.

  2. Keep a Vaping Diary: Note why, when, where, with whom, and how often you vape for a day or two.

  3. Make a Plan: Consider methods to quit. The USA Quit Vaping Laser Therapy Programme, drug and nicotine-free, stimulates endorphins, easing withdrawal.

  4. Reflect on Reasons: Write down your reasons for quitting, such as saving money, improving health, or being free from addiction.

  5. Stay Positive: Focus on the benefits of being vape-free. Eliminate worries about supplies, side effects, or dependence.

  6. Take it One Day at a Time: Concentrate on each day without vaping. Be prepared to say "No thanks – I don’t vape" if offered.

  7. Address Withdrawal: Laser therapy can speed up detox and help you feel in control.

  8. Break Habits: Avoid situations triggering the habit. Replace vaping times with different activities.

  9. Prepare to Quit: Discard all vaping products and liquids.

  10. Celebrate Freedom: Embrace a new way of life, free from vaping. Celebrate the positive change.
